Govt Khawzawl College was established in the year 1995 for the sake of the youths who could not go outside due to various reasons for higher education. The first Committee consisting of various local leaders under the chairmanship of Mr.Rothangpuia(L)VCP at the time and the first meeting was held on 30.11.1984 at 6:30 pm. The meeting resolved that the opening of this College to be started from the Academic session of 1985-86 and formed local Board to look after this College in respect of, management, collecting funds, appointing lecturers, etc. The first Chairman of the College Managing Board was Mr.Khawtinthanga the then BDO of Khawzawl.
Accordingly, the College was opened in Feb 1985 under the management of the College Managing Board. The first Pre-University class had been started in the Govt. Khawzawl High School building Zuchhip veng in the morning shift. The first teaching staff of the College was:

Since then it has been functioning fairly well under the management of the local Board for almost ten years in the midst of trial and many difficulties. The College got permission from Govt. of Mizoram on 21st January 1990. Since then Khawzawl College has been run under the management of a governing body formed by the Govt. with the following prominent persons as the Board’s President from time to time. The first Board President was Mr.Ralkhuma MCS, BDO Khawzawl in 1990-91.
Under the unceasing effort of the Governing Body, the young College is progressing ahead and got Provisional Affiliation to NEHU on 15th May 1992 followed by the creation of the Examination Centre in this College under favorable consideration of NEHU. Later, the College was upgraded to Deficit Status with effect from 1st April 1994. The College was transferred to Mizoram University and granted a permanent affiliation on 1st July 2006. The University Grant Commission included the College in the list of Collge prepared under section2(f)&12(B) of the UGC Act.1956 in20th July 2007. The Higher and Technical Education Department, Govt. of Mizoram Provincialised this College on 11th October 2007.
In 2017 the college was accredited C+ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council(NAAC).
