Webinar on Sustainable Development held on 14-09-2022, 1:00pm
On 14th September, 2022 at 1:00 pm, a webinar on “Sustainable Development Goals” was organized by the Research and Development Cell, Government Khawzawl College at par with the two-fold agenda of the Research and Development cell: 1. To implement Sustainable Development Goals and 2. Promote Research Culture. The resource person for the same was Dr. Panch Ramalingam, professor, UGC-HRDC, Pondicherry University (Central University). Although around thirty faculty members registered for the webinar and twenty four participants attended the webinar including the teaching staff members of Government Khawzawl college and participants from other colleges of Mizoram and one participant from Kolkata, West Bengal.
Mr. P.C Lalrindika, Chairman, Research and Development Cell welcomed the participants. In his short speech, he spoke about the institution and the research activities happening at Government Khawzawl College. It was followed by Dr. Soukarja Ghosal, Secretary, Research and Development Cell introducing the esteemed speaker Dr. Panch Ramalingam to the participants by reading out a profile of his illustrious career. It was followed by Dr. Panch Ramalingam’s talk on “Sustainable Development Goals”.
In his brief but insightful talk, Dr. Panch Ramalingam touched upon mainly the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals and its relevance in Indian context. The Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals which, to quote, is a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all” and these 17 goals are the following:
- No Poverty
- Zero Hunger
- Good Health and Well-being
- Quality Education
- Gender Equality
- Clean Water and Sanitation
- Affordable and Clean Energy
- Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- Reduced Inequality
- Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Responsible Consumption and Production
- Climate Action
- Life below Water
- Life on Land
- Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
- Partnerships for the Goals
The necessity for Sustainable Development Goals was first documented in the book Sylvicultura Oeconomica in 1713 by Hans Carl von Carlowitz. In his speech he also mentioned how Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modhi had taken a pledge of net zero by 2070. Finally he mentioned that detailed guidelines “Sustainable Development Goals” had been uploaded on “Niti Aayog” website of Govt. of India.
After his lecture, there was a brief Q&A session during which Dr. Ramalingam answered two very important questions asked the Chairman of Research and Development Cell Mr. P.C Lalrindika and the Secretary of Research and Development Cell Dr. Soukarja Ghosal. While answering Mr. Lalrindika’s Question, Dr. Ramalingam pointed out the Research Culture in Indian academia had got degraded and the young researchers of the present generation must take up initiatives to revitalize it by following the proper research ethics. With regard to the question asked by Dr. Soukarja Ghosal about he relevance of Sustainable Development Goals in NEP 2020, Dr. Ramalingam answered that Goal No. 4 is quite related to NEP 2020 and the necessity of Sustainable Goals Could very much be felt in NEP 2020.
The Webinar concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. P.C. Lalhmingtluangi, one of the members of Research and Development cell, Govt. Khawzawl College.
